Silent Hills cancelled? Kojima fired? Fire Konami

PTDemo1Yesterday’s news that Silent Hills, the Hideo Kojima/Guillermo del Toro project starring Norman Reedus has been cancelled was more than disappointing. It shot down a glimpse of true innovation that the horror genre desperately needs.

Konami confirmed to Kotaku the cancellation:

Konami is committed to new Silent Hill titles, however the embryonic ‘Silent Hills’ project developed with Guillermo del Toro and featuring the likeness of Norman Reedus will not be continued.

In terms of Kojima and Del Toro being involved, discussions on future Silent Hill projects are currently underway, and please stay tuned for further announcements.

I love horror games, and the Silent Hill series, and I thought PT was outstanding. PT is hands-down the scariest game you can currently play, and arguably the best horror game of the last decade. If you haven’t experienced it already, and you love horror, it is your duty to download it onto your PSN account before they remove PT from the PlayStation Network at midnight tonight.

PT isn’t perfect. the ending is somewhat of an ambiguous mess, but this teaser demonstrates two geniuses of their separate fields collaborating to bring much needed life to a potentially great-yet-struggling franchise.

Konami reassures fans in its statement that future Silent Hill projects are currently underway, but this is a significant setback for the series. It feels impossible that the Silent Hill can recover from this series of events. Please prove me wrong, Konami.

Rest in peace, PT, you scary asshole.
